A CV made in Canva is not automatically unsuitable for an ATS. What matters is the finished file: its text, reading order, structure and relevance.
Avoid deciding by the name of the design tool alone. A simple export can be easier to interpret than a complicated document created in a word processor. Inspect the result you will actually submit.
Choose the layout before decorating
Start with one clear reading path. Give work history enough space, keep dates beside the right roles and use written labels for contact details. Avoid choosing a design that forces you to remove important evidence to make it fit.
A template's sample content is not a recommended CV length. If the design contains only two short experience boxes, that does not mean your professional history should be compressed into two vague sentences.
Test the exported file
Open the download in a separate viewer. Try selecting and copying the text into a plain document. Check whether your name, email, employers, role titles and dates appear in a sensible order.
If content is missing or jumbled, simplify the design and export again. This test is a useful warning system, not a simulation of every ATS. Follow any file requirements stated by the employer even if your preferred design tool exports a different format.
Replace visual ratings with meaningful evidence
Skill bars and stars do not explain what you can do. “Power BI: data preparation, dashboard development and stakeholder reporting” is more informative than a four-star rating when those capabilities are accurate.
Similarly, a decorative headline such as “creative problem solver” needs support. A brief project description can demonstrate the problem, your contribution and what was delivered.
Keep an editable master
Think about future updates before submitting your first version. Can you add a promotion, change a target role or supply a requested document format without rebuilding the CV? Keep a factual master record outside any particular visual template.
For design-related roles, link to a portfolio that shows your visual work. Your application CV can remain restrained while the portfolio carries richer examples. Test that portfolio links open correctly and do not require unexpected access permissions.
Decide based on the application
If the employer specifies a format or provides a template, follow it. Otherwise, choose a file that remains readable, easy to update and suitable for the role. A CV review should assess both the writing and the exported document, rather than approving or rejecting it solely because it was made in Canva.
Frequently Asked Questions
Must I stop using Canva for my CV?
No. Evaluate your specific layout and export. If the file is hard to read or adapt, move the content into a simpler document.
Does a clean text-copy test prove ATS compatibility?
No. It helps identify extraction and reading-order problems, but different recruitment systems may process the same file differently.
